Your neighborhood shapes your health in ways that add up every day — which restaurants are within walking distance, how clean the air is, whether you can reach a park or a gym, and whether your tap water is safe to drink.

Is Your Neighborhood
Healing You or Hurting You?
We verified over a million locations across America — groceries, gyms, parks, fast-food chains, corner stores — then added the air you breathe and the water you drink. Enter your ZIP to see which way your neighborhood pulls.
How We Score Your Neighborhood
For your ZIP, we count every healthy option — grocery stores, health-food shops, farmers markets, parks, gyms, and healthy fast-casual spots — and every unhealthy option — fast food, convenience stores, dollar stores, liquor and vape shops — within walking-and-driving distance. Locations are weighted by type: a full grocery store counts more than a single drive-thru.
Four forces blend into your final score, each graded against every other US ZIP: food and retail mix (45%), walkability (25%, EPA National Walkability Index), air quality (20%, CDC fine-particle PM2.5 modeling), and drinking water (10%, EPA health-based violation record). When a factor isn’t available for your ZIP, the others rebalance — you’re never penalized for a data gap. Built from 1,000,000+ verified locations (2026), your result is your national percentile across ~18,000 US ZIP codes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the Neighborhood Wellness Score calculated?
The score blends four factors: food and retail mix near you (45%), walkability (25%), air quality (20%), and drinking-water safety (10%). Each is scored against all US ZIP codes to produce a national percentile — your final number reflects where your neighborhood sits on that curve.
What does healing vs. hurting mean?
The verdicts — Healing, Leaning Healthy, Working Against You — are percentile bands. A Healing neighborhood ranks in the top tier nationally across all four factors. Working Against You doesn’t mean danger; it means the environmental pull of your immediate area leans away from optimal health habits.
Why does my score look different from the next ZIP over?
Even adjacent ZIP codes can have very different mixes of grocery stores, fast food, parks, and air quality readings. A single ZIP boundary can separate a walkable main street with a farmers market from a car-dependent strip-mall corridor. The score captures those real differences.
Does the score account for income or cost of living?
No — the Neighborhood Wellness Score measures the physical environment only. Two neighborhoods with identical incomes can have very different scores based on what is actually nearby. Income data is intentionally excluded so the score reflects your surroundings, not your finances.
How often is the data updated?
Location data refreshes annually; EPA air and water data follows each agency’s own update cycle. Current data period: 2025-2026.
Can I compare two ZIP codes?
Enter any ZIP code to see its results — just type a new one to check a different neighborhood. Each result includes a national percentile rank, so two separate lookups are easy to compare.
